4-H is the largest out-of-school youth program in the United States and the only nationwide youth organization administered through land grant universities. In Oregon, 4-H is affiliated with Oregon State University. 4-H Youth Development is a program of the Oregon State University Extension Service that serves nearly 25,000 youths across the state.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, many young people in Oregon faced increased isolation. For some — including youth who are home-schooled, experience social anxiety or are neurodivergent — the need for safe, supportive spaces to connect with peers became especially important. Without traditional in-person programs, they lacked opportunities to build friendships and practice social and leadership skills.

To meet this need, Daniela Dávalos, OSU Extension 4-H coordinator in Marion County, developed a program of online and in-person gaming sessions in 2022. The goal was to provide youth with a welcoming environment where they could connect with others who shared similar interests.

Dávalos hosted 52 online and 34 in-person gaming sessions throughout the year. Activities focused on team building, communication, basic math skills and imagination through tabletop games such as Dungeons & Dragons. Each session required about an hour of preparation and included two hours of play.

In total, the program delivered 125 hours of online engagement and 74 hours in person. Fifty-three youth participated consistently. Parents shared that the program helped their children feel more comfortable socializing and strengthened their ability to connect with peers.

The sessions also laid the groundwork for future 4-H opportunities, including 4-H Allied Guilds Game Days and the 4-H Allied Guilds Camp — events that continue to foster community and creativity for youth with shared passions.
