n rural communities, underserved youths often face limited access to career pathways in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields due to a lack of opportunities and resources. At the same time, there is a growing shortage of skilled workers in STEM occupations. Connecting young people with these careers requires meaningful, community-based solutions — and strong partnerships across sectors.

To help address this need, Barbara Brody, assistant professor of practice with Oregon State University Extension Service in Malheur County, collaborated with the Frontier STEM Hub, Frazier Aviation, Treasure Valley Community College Aviation Program and Stowell Aviation to launch the Aerospace Career Exploration (ACE) Academy in 2021.

ACE Academy, also held in 2022, was a three-day, hands-on summer learning experience for underserved youth, ages 14 to 18, from rural areas of Malheur County. The academy introduces participants to aviation careers while also building interest and skills in STEM.

Students took part in a variety of activities, including:

  • Lessons in flight planning, aviation history and the physics of flight
  • Field trips to aviation-related industry sites
  • Instruction in aircraft design and maintenance
  • Airport operations and management
  • Basic drone flight and safety
  • Flight simulation practice

The program provided youths with a unique opportunity to learn directly from aviation professionals and educators, helping them build knowledge, confidence and career awareness.

Post-program evaluations showed strong results. All participants reported a significant increase in interest and aspirations related to STEM careers. Additionally, 80% of youth said the academy greatly influenced their decision to pursue a career in an aviation-related field. Participants also rated ACE Academy as a standout experience, with all agreeing it exceeded the quality of other camps they had attended.

One student shared, “I came to ACE Academy in a neutral position. I wasn’t very excited to be there, but I wasn’t mad that I was there either. Once we got started, the pace quickly picked up. I began to feel excited to be there. Everything we did was very interesting. As the camp went along, it kept getting better and better.”

By connecting youths with real-world STEM experiences and industry professionals, ACE Academy helped build a future workforce while opening doors for students in rural Oregon.
