How to remove moss from my roof?

What do you recommend for removing moss from roof composite shingles in the least toxic way? The moss is present on the north side of my roof. Thank you!

Getting rid of moss doesn’t rely on chemicals, alone. Instead, it begins with physical activity to remove it with a brush or broom. After the moss is removed, consider applying a thin application of protective material, which helps limit moss development temporarily.

General guidelines for moss removal

  • Use a brush or broom to remove the moss. I suggest either a standard bristle scrub brush or a stiff broom.
  • Don’t use any sort of high-pressure device. They degrade roof quality and longevity by removing some of the gravel layer added to the roofing during the manufacturing process.
  • After the moss has been removed, apply a commercial product. Commercial products can slow moss development, but they may only be effective for short periods of time and need reapplication. In general, it’s easier to apply liquids more evenly than powders.
  • Be safe. These measures can be dangerous, due to the slippery surface of the roof where there is moss or algae. Carefully consider the hazards before taking on this job, and seek professional assistance when needed.

Moss prevention

Here are some tips for discouraging the moss from growing on your driveway.

  • Sun exposure: Moss is a shade-loving plant that does not thrive in sunny conditions. Prune trees back to allow as much sunlight as possible to shine on the roof.
  • Water restriction: Moss grows best with plenty of moisture. While precipitation is difficult to avoid, reduce any other sources of water that may be collecting on the roof.
