We made frozen pizza for dinner last night. Unfortunately, we then settled down for a long winter's nap and forgot to put the leftover pizza and a bottle of ranch dressing away in the fridge. Both sat on the counter overnight. My husband put both in the fridge this morning and thinks "they'll be fine." I think not. Who is right?
Oh, boy. this sounds like an interesting conversation first thing in the morning.
I spoke to a ranch dressing manufacturer and their recommendation was that if the dressing was out less than 24 hours, it should be fine. Commercial salad dressings are highly acidified, which would prevent or greatly slow bacterial growth. You may see some change in texture.
The pizza is another story and more difficult to give a definite answer.
There are many variables. Proteins (meats and cheeses) support bacterial growth. The bacteria and toxins are not always destroyed by reheating. Our rule of thumb is that perishable food not be at room temperature more than 3-4 hours.
We would recommend that the pizza be discarded.
