Research shows that while 80% of community college students intend to earn a bachelor’s degree, only 25% transfer to a four-year college within five years, and just 17% earn a bachelor’s within six years of transferring.
A significant barrier for community college students to four-year degree completion is the inability to transfer most credits, with less than 60% of students managing to do so. Students who can transfer most of their credits are 2½ times more likely to earn a bachelor’s degree. Additionally, the articulation process is often confusing and hard to navigate. Many students feel overwhelmed and lack the necessary support to meet their degree completion goals.
Many students have expressed relief and gratitude for the support, which has allowed them to make informed decisions and feel confident in their transfer process.
Open Campus, a statewide program of the Oregon State University Extension Service, has coordinators dedicated to supporting transfer students and aiding in degree completion. These coordinators, some of whom share positions co-funded with community colleges, work directly on community college campuses. They build relationships with faculty and students, providing personalized support through the transfer process. Coordinators meet with students at various events and through scheduled individual meetings, offering resources and guidance tailored to each student's needs.
Coordinators consult with community college and university advisors, admissions, financial aid, scholarships and credit articulation offices to connect students with essential transfer information. They assist with tasks such as completing applications and other forms, helping students overcome other barriers such as transportation or housing and registering for and attending orientation sessions. Coordinators also help students navigate the complexities of dual enrollment programs and provide tips on how to prepare for meetings with advisors or campus tours
Having coordinators readily available to answer questions and provide step-by-step guidance has proven invaluable for students. Many students have expressed relief and gratitude for the support, which has allowed them to make informed decisions and feel confident in their transfer process. Coordinators continue to support students even after they have transferred, helping them adjust to their new environment.
At the Portland Community College Rock Creek Campus, over 280 students have received assistance with overcoming barriers to degree completion. The ongoing support from coordinators has significantly improved students' ability to navigate the transfer process and achieve their educational goals.
A community college student who successfully transferred to OSU with Open Campus’ assistance wrote, “I would like to send you my sincerest thanks and gratitude for all of your help in making this possible for me. While it has been a roller coaster trying to get through all of the people, meetings, emails, and planning, I have finally been able to get things rolling smoothly at OSU. This is definitely attributed to your perseverance to get me support. Again, I thank you very much for the efforts you've put in for me. “
