Sharpen your pruning skills and build confidence with the kick-off session of the Clackamas County Master Gardener Association's 2026 "Let's Grow Together" webinar series.
Pruning becomes easy if you understand two things: how plants respond to cuts and the ideal shape for trees and shrubs. This presentation explores how to develop a strong framework in ornamental trees to withstand wind, snow, and ice. Key elements of structural strength are covered, including branch placement and distribution, crotch angle, aspect ratio, taper, and root structure—each contributing to greater resilience. Practical guidance is also provided on using heading, removal, and reduction cuts to achieve desired results. The presentation continues with essential pruning tips for fruit trees, including where fruit forms and which ages of wood are most productive, and wraps up with helpful advice for pruning ornamental shrubs. Join in to gain confidence making cuts for the right reasons, at the right time, and in the right spots.
The presentation is led by Sherry Sheng, an Oregon State University Extension Master Gardener and instructor with the award-winning 10-Minute University™ Program. Teaching gardening classes since 2006, she has produced numerous instructional videos available at at https://cmastergardeners.org/10-minute-university/ Sherry brings both home and community garden experience to her engaging presentations.
This online seminar is free with advance registration. Can’t attend live? Register for the session, and you will receive a recording link two days after the class.
