Grab your camera or smartphone and join us to identify the insects, birds, wild plants, and other wild organisms in the Inspiration Garden in Independence. Your efforts will help to document garden biodiversity across Oregon!

What's a BioBlitz? A BioBlitz is a community science project that focuses on identifying as many species as possible in a specific area in a short period of time. This year's fall Master Gardener BioBlitz is happening in gardens across Oregon on September 25th. We're hosting an in-person meetup from 10am-12pm at the beautiful Inspiration Garden in Independence.

Who can participate? This outdoor event is open to all ages. Kids and families are welcome and encouraged!

Master Gardeners will be on hand to answer questions and share about the garden.

Polk County 4-H will offer a nature-based bingo game for kids.

Volunteers from the Oregon Bee Atlas will be sharing info on native bees and helping with bee identification.

To participate:

  1. First, create an iNaturalist account, if you don't already have one. If you're using a smartphone download the iNaturalist App, too.
  2. Then, join the statewide Master Gardener iNaturalist project page.
  3. On September 25th, grab your camera/smartphone, and head to the Inspiration Garden. Sign in at our booth (any time between 10am-12pm) at the picnic shelter off F St. Then head out into the garden to take photos of the wild plants, insects, and animals. Volunteers will be on hand to help you get started.
    • Note #1: We are looking for wild plants (such as native trees or weeds) and animals. Domesticated animals (such as a dog) and plants (such as garden vegetables or plants) are not what we are looking for with this BioBlitz.
  4. At the end of the BioBlitz, upload your photos to our iNaturalist project page, and see what other gardeners across Oregon have found in their own garden.
    • Note #2: iNaturalist observations require a photograph and a location. A smartphone is not required, but the iNaturalist App is the simplest way to add observations. Alternatively, you can upload images from a digital camera via your account on the iNaturalist website.
