Coursework

The Oregon Master Naturalist Program is broken into two required training components:

  • Online Course
  • Ecoregion Field Course

Each is a separate course separated by individual registrations and prices. Generally, the Online Course is to be taken first, before the in-person Ecoregion Field Course.

Online Course

This course is the first step to becoming an Oregon Master Naturalist.

  • It is delivered entirely online using Canvas, Oregon State University's online learning system.
  • A new topic is covered each week. Each topic has an interactive reading with images, figures, and a video. And a written assignment with class discussion (via a discussion board) and a quiz.
  • One new topic is released each week, for a total of 8 weeks.
  • Four additional weeks are available if you need extra time.
  • Completing the course requires passing the final exam. The 25 questions are multiple-choice or true-or-false.

This course is offered twice per year through OSU's Professional and Continuing Education (PACE) program.

Ecoregion Field Course

We recommended taking the online course before starting an ecoregion field course.

Ecoregion field courses are held at various locations around Oregon. They give you a deeper understanding and appreciation for the ecologically distinct areas that make Oregon unique.

The courses occur mainly in the field and give you an on-location experience with what you are learning.
