OSU Extension earns national honors for wildfire and forestry education publications

CORVALLIS, Ore. — Oregon State University’s Division of Extension and Engagement received three national awards for educational materials from the Association of Natural Resources and Extension Professionals.

The association announced its 2024 Awards Program recipients on March 28. Publications produced by the OSU Extension Service received one gold award and two silver awards.

Faculty and staff honored are in three Extension program areas:

  • Forestry and Natural Resources (FNR)
  • Family and Community Health (FCH)
  • Agricultural and Natural Resources (ANR)

Honorees also include Extension Communications, the Oregon State University Center for Health Innovation, The Nature Conservancy, Bold Ampersand and Washington State University collaborators.

Gold award

Fire-Resistant Plants for Home Landscapes received the gold award for long publication. The publication gives homeowners examples of flammable plants and fire-resistant alternatives, along with guidance on spacing and maintenance to improve defensible space around homes.

Authors include Amy Jo Detweiler (ANR), Stephen Fitzgerald (FNR), Ariel Cowan (FNR), Neil Bell (ANR) and Thomas Stokely of The Nature Conservancy.

Silver award

Nuestro Futuro en Nuestras Manos/Our Future in Our Hands earned a silver award for long publication. The bilingual booklet prepares families for wildfire with simple actions they can take now and steps for post-fire recovery.

The publication covers:

  • Preparing a home and belongings for wildfire.
  • Reducing exposure to negative health effects.
  • Mental health support during and after fire.
  • Where to find recovery assistance and resources.

Authors and contributors include Carrie Berger (FNR), Kara Baylog (FNR), Glenn Ahrens (FNR), Emily Jane Davis (FNR), Aaron Groth (FNR), Dusti Linnell (FCH) and Oralia Mendez of the Oregon State University Center for Health Innovation. Christina Friehauf of Bold Ampersand was the graphic designer.

Silver award

How to Prevent Phytophthoras in Restoration Plantings on Your Woodlands received silver in the short publication category. The publication provides a guide to preventing damage from phytophthoras microorganisms that can severely harm crops, ornamentals and native plants.

Topics include:

  • How phytophthoras spread in restoration projects.
  • Prevention practices and sanitation steps.
  • Recommendations for selecting clean planting stock.
