What fruit and berries do well in my area and how do I protect them?

OSU Extension has a few great publications that can help you sort through all the different cultivars of apples, cherries and blueberries. For Apple and Cherry, please see Growing Tree Fruits and Nuts in the Home Orchard (https://catalog.extension.oregonstate.edu/ec819). There are tables in this publication which compare the different varieties for growing habit and culinary properties. For Blueberry, please see Blueberry Cultivars for the Pacific Northwest (https://catalog.extension.oregonstate.edu/pnw656). The cultivars are listed in order of ripening so you can pick from the top of the lists for early season, towards the middle of the list for mid-season, etc.

As for managing deer and birds, your best best will be to use fencing or netting to physically keep these pests from your plantings. A secure deer fence around your garden and then draping trees/bushes with bird netting when berries are ripe should help prevent losses.
