Are all sugars equally evil?
I put sugar in my daily cups of coffee, probably consuming 4 teaspoons total. Am I deluding myself in believing that "pure cane", "raw" or "turbinado" sugars are better for me than white refined sugar?
Cane and beet sugar are highly processed. See this YouTube video, "How is Cane Sugar Processed? (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vCLEYmugfDw)". All forms of sugar are low in nutrients, providing mostly calories (about 16 calories per teaspoon). Raw sugars are slightly less processed and thus have some trace minerals. Honey is one of the least processed sweeteners and may have health properties unique to the honeybees that produce them. Too much of any sweetener can add calories and lead to obesity and heart disease. Here is a link to more information on sweeteners (https://fnic.nal.usda.gov/food-composition/nutritive-and-nonnutritive-sweetener-resources).
I would suggest you continue to use the sweetener of your choice, but don't consider it a "health" food as the volume (4 tsp) is too small to supply any significant vitamins or minerals. Hope this helps, thanks for asking.
