The Parsons Family has owned 166 acres near Howard Prairie Reservoir in southeastern Jackson County since 1937.
Jud Parsons has been personally involved in the property for almost 70 years and will be on-hand to lead attendees on a tour of the property looking at a wide range of forest and resource management issues and endeavors. With the help of Forester and fellow woodland owner Marty Main, who has been involved in the project since 1995, the tour will look at: the historical context of the property and management of the working forest to achieve multiple values including forest health, wildlife habitat, protection and enhancement of important wetlands and accelerating development of older forest conditions and values through various silvicultural practices. Periodic income through timber harvesting has been conducted 4 times in the past 25 years, most recently (2018) by Don Hamann who will also help lead the tour. The property is also currently under a Conservation Easement initiated in 2012 with the Southern Oregon Land Conservancy, who also will be on-hand to describe how that program has worked in helping Jud and his family achieve their long-term objectives. This is a good opportunity to see how small woodland owners can accomplish important conservation objectives through economically viable forest and resource management carefully applied over time.
