I live on the Oregon Coast and want to start growing vegetables in May. Because the coastal climate can be cool and windy, what are some of the fastest-growing vegetables to plant, and what should I consider when choosing varieties?
Growing vegetables on the Oregon Coast can be more challenging because of cooler temperatures and wind. You may need to protect plants with a cloche, row cover or other structure, especially while they are getting established.
Choose quick-maturing varieties
When selecting seeds or starts, look for varieties with a short time to maturity. This information is usually listed on the seed packet or plant label.
For example, some tomato varieties, such as ‘Early Girl’, may mature in about 50 to 60 days. Tomatoes still need protection from wind and six to eight hours of full sun to produce well.
Start with leafy greens
In general, leafy vegetables such as lettuce tend to mature more quickly than fruiting crops. They can be a good choice for a May planting, especially in cooler coastal conditions.
