Welcome to the 4-H Forestry Project

Forests are full of discovery—and in Oregon, they're also a big part of our identity. From towering Douglas firs to high desert pines, our state is home to some of the most diverse and productive forests in the world. Through the 4-H Forestry Project, you’ll explore the science of trees, the health of forest ecosystems, and the role people play in managing them. Whether you’re learning to identify native species, measuring tree growth, or thinking about your future, you’ll gain hands-on skills and a deeper connection to Oregon’s natural resources. At Oregon State University—an internationally recognized leader in forestry—you’ll find plenty of pathways to keep growing.

Careers in Forestry: Your Future in the Forest Starts Here

Forestry is more than logging and lumber—though those are important, too. Oregon’s forest sector supported 62,300 jobs in 2023, making up 3% of the state’s workforce (Source). These jobs paid well, with an average annual wage of $71,900, which is higher than the state average.

Forestry careers span private companies, government agencies, and nonprofits. Some roles are highly technical, while others focus on outdoor leadership or community education. Here are just a few exciting forestry jobs you could explore:

  • Recreation Manager – Oversees hiking trails, campgrounds, and wilderness access
  • Urban Forester – Helps cities manage and grow healthy trees in neighborhoods and parks
  • Forest Ecologist – Studies how plants, animals, water, and fire interact in forest systems
  • Wildland Firefighter – Protects people, property, and ecosystems from wildfire
  • GIS Specialist – Uses maps and data to make forest management decisions
