Biography

Karly grew up in rural western Willamette Valley and the central Oregon Coast, immersed amongst the Rickreall, Siletz and Nestucca watersheds. She earned a bachelor’s degree in socio-cultural anthropology and Indigenous Nations studies from Portland State University, complemented by studying southeast Alaska ecology and policy of place in the Tongass National Forest. Karly earned her master’s in environmental science, with certificates in environmental education and science communications at the McCall Outdoor Science School (MOSS). Here she participated in research aimed to enhance equitable STEM learning practices for graduate students and K-12 outdoor school programs. Karly has held diverse roles in community building, organizing, education, research, advocacy, policy and social work. In her role as Western Regional Coordinator, she aims to continue fostering deep relationships with the lands, waters, wildlife and communities of this region; ensuring all outdoor school students and communities experience the magic and healing of this special place in equitable, just, and sustainable ways.
