Community projects
The Dalles Imagination Garden (The DIG)
The DIG is a colorful, educational garden designed for children, families and the community. It provides a place to explore, learn and connect through gardening. Master Gardener volunteers and 4-H leaders offer workshops, host youth camps and maintain this outdoor learning space. The DIG received the Marje Luce Search for Excellence Award in 2011.
Mornings at The DIG is a Saturday workshop series held in July and August from 9 to 10 a.m. Sessions are led by Master Gardener volunteers and local partners and cover a range of seasonal gardening topics. These informal gatherings provide an opportunity to learn, ask questions and connect with others interested in gardening.
Master Gardeners partner with District 21 schools to help students design, plant and care for garden beds at The DIG. Students learn about garden ecology, food production, and pollinator habitat while gaining hands-on experience.
In partnership with 4-H and other local organizations, Master Gardeners offer seasonal day camps that combine gardening, art and exploration. These camps encourage curiosity, creativity and environmental awareness among youth.
Families are welcome to visit The DIG and explore on your own. Features such as a garden library, interpretive areas and interactive spaces invite children and adults to experience the garden at their own pace.
Location: At the intersection of Klindt Drive and Steelhead Way, along the riverfront trail in the Port District of The Dalles.
