Training and certification
Step 1: Complete the training
You can take the Master Gardener training in person or online.
In-person training: In Wasco County, in-person classes are held from February through March, on Tuesdays from 5:30-8pm. at the OSU Extension office in The Dalles. Several of the more hands-on classes are held on Saturdays, as well. The course is taught by Oregon State University Extension staff and horticulture experts.
Applications open in December for the following year. To receive an application, contact the local coordinator
Online training: If the in-person schedule doesn’t work for you, a remote online training option is available. It covers the same topics and prepares you for volunteer service in your community.
Step 2: Volunteer in your community
After completing the training, new Master Gardeners complete 40 hours of volunteer service during their first year. In Wasco County, these hours are due by October 31st.
Volunteer opportunities include:
- Answering gardening questions at plant clinics
- Volunteering in community or demonstration gardens
- Helping with school or youth garden projects
- Speaking at local garden clubs or community events
- Completing an approved project of your own design
Your local coordinator will help you schedule and track volunteer time. See the Guide to Being a Master Gardener Volunteer for details about roles and expectations.
Step 3: Stay active each year
To keep your certification, complete annual continuing education and additional volunteer hours.
