there's a lot of risks a lot of pinch
points line of fire issues there's high
pressures Gables lifting heavy loads
rough seas make it hard to stand up you
have a lot more resources on land at sea
you have whatever is on the boat and
that's it the time it takes to get help
that makes a hugely important to have
have a more comprehensive first aid
training or survival training of any
kind
[Music]
this training is a specialized
wilderness style first-aid training
that's been tuned specifically for
commercial fishermen
[Music]
it speaks a lot to the community and to
the people that are part of the fishing
history
these safety trainings actually came
from a research project so my colleague
with Oregon Sea Grant worked with Laurel
Kinsel from an Oregon State University
to do research on what were the common
non fatal injuries in the Dungeness crab
fishery and from that they developed
this training when we learned about what
injuries are happening we were able to
provide examples and scenarios and
information within the training that
then was specific to the work that's
being done on vessels for commercial
fishing and through working with people
in marine science but also with Sea
Grant saying well we should actually
have people from the commercial fishing
community be part of the project helped
inform all steps of it then we can
really truly engage the fishermen and
conversations and an injury prevention
the idea behind that was that we can get
ideas from the fishermen how do they
prevent injuries instead of somebody
maybe in the middle of the country
making assumptions about things when
they've never been on a boat so your job
will be to get that crewman safely from
the position where he was hurt
transiting down the boat the information
that you're gonna get from this class is
above and beyond okay on three
one two three you're gonna learn ways to
transport patients and and how to pack
things out at sea just using things that
may be in your galley or on your boat if
you're investing in yourself and in your
boat having this additional class and
training for yourself is only gonna help
benefit you and your team if at any time
you feel unstable with your patient just
like on the real boat what would you do
yeah time out when I was sitting in that
class figured okay another first-aid
class and once I realized that the
instructor was actually giving me useful
knowledge it changed my whole perception
or my attitude towards the course and I
got really into it
and got a lot of useful information that
I keep my notebook up in the wheelhouse
from the course I think a lot of
fishermen really do care about safety
and really do want to be as prepared as
they can be so we really appreciate
every fisherman that does contribute to
the understanding and promotes the
health and safety of the industry
