i love gardening because it is fun It is
always an adventure You can never tell
how things are going to turn out even
though you've done it a 100 times before
And it's rewarding What you grow will
reward you with a color food and just
that personal satisfaction I retired
really young which is a really lucky
thing thought the question was what was
I going to do with my life i've always
loved gardening I enjoyed learning So
being the master gardener means
continuously learn about the science
about gardening So I signed up and loved
everything about it and never left The
master gardeners are volunteers who are
trained by the university to extend the
impact of the university research and
knowledge The master gardeners then are
able to serve their own community and
that program last year served people all
across the state When I started out as a
volunteer I thought it would just be a
fun thing to do But it turned out
volunteering has become a very integral
part of my life and it has given me so
much satisfaction and meaning because I
and so many other people who joined the
efforts are making so many other
people's lives better and that's so much
bigger than I ever imagined

When Sherry Sheng retired in 2005, she joined the OSU Extension Master Gardener™ program in Clackamas County, eager to learn about the science of growing plants. In 2006, Sheng came up with an idea to offer research-based information in small, digestible pieces: 10-Minute University, a combination of short sessions taught by Master Gardeners, plus videos and handouts on dozens of gardening topics.

“There’s nothing like experiencing firsthand what research-based information can do in gardening success,” she says. “I learned the answers to so many things that I wondered about. I wanted to spread that joy of doing the right thing and being successful.”

Thousands of people volunteer with the Master GardenerTM program statewide.
