Hi -- we lost power for about 20 hours last Saturday (2/13) and then in came back on for about 36 hours, only to go out again. As of this morning (Saturday, 2/20) we have been without any power for more than five days and it is still out, with a prediction of 2-4 more days until we reconnect. I have been assuming that we would lose the contents of our entire freezer.
How can I most safely proceed? Are they safe as long as they remain frozen? Or is the time lapse such that, even in a largely-frozen state, it is too risky? Needless to say I hate to lose all this food but I'd hate even more for us to get sick.
I'm sorry about this disruptive power outage. Here is the link to a publication that gives some helpful guidelines If your home freezer stops
There are also tips, in Storing Food for Safety and Quality
Regarding your specific items, if ice crystals are still present you can refreeze most items. As cold as it has been, some things may have not thawed completely.
Frozen foods, including meats, that still have ice crystals in them indicate that they have not reached refrigerator or above temperatures, so no dangerous pathogens could have grown in them. Meat can be refrozen even if it has fully thawed but not reached above 45f. ’ (high temperature for a refrigerator) just make sure to cook it well when you do thaw and consume it.
