Training opportunities

The Coast to Forest program can connect you with a variety of trainings, including:

Adult Mental Health First Aid

Through this training, you will develop the skills and confidence to help others in crisis and promote healing.

Participants in this course commit to a total of 8 hours of coursework — two hours of self-paced pre-work and a six-hour instructor-led session.

Adult Mental Health First Aid covers the following and is offered in both English and Spanish:

  • Substance abuse disorders
  • Mental health conditions
  • Mental health stigma
  • How to respond to a person in crisis
  • Community resources for getting help

Youth Mental Health First Aid

Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) is primarily designed for adults who regularly interact with young people. It teaches family, friends and community members how to help an adolescent (age 12–18) who is experiencing a mental health or addiction challenge, or is in crisis.

The training introduces common mental health challenges for youth and reviews typical adolescent development. It also teaches a 5-step action plan for both crisis and non-crisis situations.

Topics covered include:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Disorders in which psychosis may occur
  • Disruptive behavior disorders
  • Eating disorders
  • Substance use

Strategies for Implementing Spanish Mental Health First Aid Training

This free webinar-style training describes strategies to implement and adapt Adult Spanish Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training. Offering Mental Health First Aid training to Spanish-speaking members of our community is an essential step in equity. This is an ongoing need and can help reduce stigma and recognize the signs and symptoms of a mental health crisis.

In this webinar, participants will learn:

  • Foundational information about Primeros Auxilios de Salud Mental (Spanish Mental Health First Aid).
  • Cultural barriers and mental health stigma in the Latino/a/x community.
  • Recommendations for implementation.

Question, Persuade, Refer Training

Like CPR, Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) is an emergency response to someone in crisis and can save lives. QPR training requires approximately 1–2 hours of commitment and covers the following:

  • How to connect a person in crisis to help.
  • How to get help for yourself or learn more about preventing suicide.
  • The common causes of suicidal behavior.
  • The warning signs of suicide.

Community Conversations facilitator training

This free webinar-style training equips future facilitators with the necessary skills to deliver Community Conversations about Behavioral Health. This tool aims to support community collaboration to address challenges with mental health and substance use issues affecting communities.

This free online introductory course provides an overview of substance use disorders, along with evidence-based approaches to prevention, intervention and treatment.

Other continuing education courses on substance use tend to focus on specific professions or situations — this course takes a more comprehensive and inclusive approach. Substance Use Disorders 101 is uniquely designed for anyone interested in helping individuals or communities impacted by substance use disorders.
