Certified Burn Manager

The Oregon Department of Forestry’s Certified Burn Manager (CBM) program provides formal training and certification of individuals in the safe and effective use of prescribed fire on ODF-protected lands in Oregon. Prescribed burns led by CBMs can be enrolled in the Prescribed Fire Liability Program, which provides some civil liability protection when certain requirements are met.

Oregon State University Extension is a service provider for the CBM program and offers 24 hours of classroom instruction. This course is one of the requirements for certification. While the CBM program is open to anyone, individuals taking the course are expected to have some experience implementing prescribed fire. Burning with a local Prescribed Burn Association is a great way to gain that experience.
