4-H Youth Development is a program of the Oregon State University Extension Service that serves nearly 25,000 youths across the state. The 4-H program plays a significant role in county fairs, providing youths with opportunities to showcase their skills and projects.
4-H members present a variety of projects, including animal science, arts and crafts, cooking and more. These exhibits are judged, and participants can earn ribbons and awards. Many 4-H’ers raise and show livestock such as cattle, sheep, pigs and poultry. These shows are a highlight of the fairs, where youths demonstrate their knowledge and handling skills.
At fairs, 4-H’ers create educational displays to share information about their projects and the skills they've learned. These displays help educate the public about various topics. Older 4-H members can take on leadership roles, such as serving as junior superintendents, helping to organize events and mentoring younger members.
Some 4-H highlights at county fairs in 2024 included:
- In Linn County, OSU Extension held a T-shirt design contest for 4-H and Future Farmers of America members, drawing 49 entries. The winning youth worked with a professional designer to have their design printed on close to 700 T-shirts and 1,000 stickers that were handed out at the fair.
- Enhanced communication and community engagement led to a significant increase in 4-H participation at the Wasco County Fair, with 116 youths exhibiting 883 projects. Improved event transitions and higher livestock auction revenue reflected the program's success.
- In Morrow County, close to 100% of 4-H members participate in numerous project areas. At the Morrow County Fair, 201 4-H’ers compiled nearly 1,700 entries in 417 classes.
- Improved hands-on experiences and showmanship clinics in Douglas County led to an increase from 638 to 742 in completed animal science projects. Members felt more confident and better equipped for the county fair and lamb show, fostering a supportive and knowledgeable community.
