Oregon Season Tracker engages community to advance climate science

The Oregon Season Tracker program, coordinated by Oregon State University Extension, has engaged hundreds of volunteers across Oregon to collect critical environmental data on precipitation and plant phenology. By installing standardized rain gauges and recording seasonal changes in native plants, participants generate real-time, location-specific data that contributes to scientific research and climate monitoring efforts.

These data support multiple research institutions including the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest and strengthens our understanding of how ecosystems across Oregon are responding to shifting weather patterns and long-term climate trends. Oregon Season Tracker observations have been used in regional modeling efforts, natural resource planning and long-term ecological studies.

Volunteers including landowners, educators and students contribute data from urban, suburban and rural areas — broadening the geographic scope of climate-related research. The program's approach makes science more accessible while also providing valuable learning experiences for individuals and communities.

The Oregon Season Tracker benefits Oregonians through scientific research, community engagement and environmental awareness by involving community members in real-time data collection. It supports informed decision-making for land management, climate adaptation and conservation across Oregon.
