About Ties to the Land

A couple decades ago, OSU's Forestry and Natural Resources Extension Program recognized the need for succession planning resources in the small woodland owner community. Like many landowners across the country, small woodland owners were experiencing high rates of ownership turnover and this trend was unnerving to them and local extension agents. Forestry and Natural Resources Extension agents, together with the local landowners, professionals, and the Austin Family Business Center, pooled their resources and passion to develop a facilitated workshop for succession planning.

Today, the Ties to the Land program prides itself on delivering up-to-date succession planning information to a wide variety of landowners. Starting a succession plan is no easy task and Ties to the Land can provide inspiration and motivation for completing your plan.

Mission & Vision

The Ties to the Land program seeks to provide education and inspiration to forest and farm landowners, land-based family businesses, professional service providers, and educators to help landowners meet their goals for succession planning. This land-grant university program provides written materials and website resources for landowners and facilitators.

We work with and through a network of national and local landowner, conservation and civic organizations, and state and federal agencies who expand both our programmatic scope and reach. Our focus on education and the quality of our collaborators provide both distinctiveness and effectiveness.

Get started

At Ties to the Land, we recognize that differences exist in people's values, goals, and skills regarding land management and those differences will be reflected in their plan. We provide tools and resources that are designed to help landowners make the decisions necessary to achieve their objectives and pass their land to succeeding generations. Our materials include a video-based program for workshop facilitators and a workbook to help guide landowners through the succession planning process.
