Is this a gopher snake?

Q:

Please identify this snake that I found on my property. I am hoping it is a gopher snake.

A:

Thank you for the great photo! That really helps with identifying the snake.

This snake definitely appears to be a gopher snake, including that dark crescent marking that wraps from the jaw, over and through the eyes, to the other jaw. The snake will do a good job of keeping rodents in check around your house and garden!

Strategies for rodent control?

Q: My backyard got invaded by gophers (or someone who enjoys making holes). I'm worrying that I might injure myself in the holes. I have tried setting traps, but have been unsuccessful. I heard some snakes can kill gophers, but I'm also aware not to release invasive creatures. What do you recommend?
