Squash Bee Survey

You don't have to identify bees for this project. Just snap an image of the bees you inside squash flowers in the morning. When in doubt, take a picture through our survey. Negative results (i.e., saw bee other than a squash bee) are super useful in showing the bee hasn't showed up yet.

Observations of squash bees, or bees you suspect to be squash bees, are uploaded through a platform known as Survey 123.

Instructions:

Step 1: Take pictures of the bees visiting your summer squash (e.g., zucchini or yellow squash), winter squash, pumpkin or gourd. Photograph bees while they are in the flowers (they often don't move a lot when actively visiting the flowers). Since squash bees fly early, check out your flowers before 9am.

Step 2: Upload all the images of the bees you were able to photograph into the app. When in doubt submit an image - we will do the identification on our end. If you have trouble uploading your image, email your image to [email protected].

Step 3: Tell us the kinds of squash that were in flower.

Step 4: If you think you saw a squash bee, or are sure you didn't, let us know.

Step 5: If you saw anything cool, ANYTHING AT ALL, type it in the comments.

Step 6: Save the record and send it to Oregon State University for processing.

Remember, if you change locations (e.g., go to a different garden) you need to create a new record.
