Q: We have a large walnut tree and would like to compost the leaves for our vegetable garden. I have read conflicting reports about the ability of composting to break down the toxin juglone. Is it safe to compost these leaves?

The intent of this add-on exercise is for PSA grower course trainees to think through various harvest and post-harvest scenarios and consider implications related to produce safety in the context of real production environments. Each group of trainees (4-6 per group) is given a set of the printed photos to work through. They are asked specific questions, and given 15-20 minutes to work in their groups. Following group discussions, trainers go through the slide deck and ask participants to share what they discussed in their groups about each scenario.

Q: I have a California lilac tree in my back yard. A thick root is underneath the pavers and lifting them up. Will I kill the tree if I cut out that root? I sure don’t want to kill it!
Q: We have some large laurels with holes and discoloration on the leaves and wondering what is causing it and how to treat it. We don't see anything on the bottom side of leaves. We'd appreciate your opinion and advice.
