OSU Extension 4-H has partnered with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife Salmon Trout Enhancement Program to deliver an 8 week hands-on curriculum for 3-6 grade students!
Salmon in the Classroom Project Curriculum
The 4-H Fish Stewards in the Classroom curriculum helps students meet core standards in science (life cycles, classification, and more) and social sciences. The program uses a specially designed hands-on lessons that supports student learning in a fun and highly engaging way.
Pacific Lamprey in the classroom
US Fish and Wildlife, Columbia River Intertribal Fish Commission, Native American Youth Association and OSU Extension 4-H have partnered together to develop a new multi-media curriculum and classroom presentation for 4-8 grade students! We are now recruiting teachers and library media specialists to help us bring this program to Portland metro youth.
What is a Pacific Lamprey?
Pacific Lamprey is an amazing and ancient fish that like the Salmon plays an important ecological and cultural role in the Pacific Northwest. Today Pacific Lamprey is threatened and USFWS biologists and local Pacific Northwest tribes are working hard to protect this important fish. Like the Salmon, Pacific Lamprey are an anadromous fish and they live in both fresh water and the ocean during their lifetime.

The Pacific Lamprey in the Classroom curriculum helps students meet core standards in science (life cycles, classification, and more) and social sciences.
The program uses a new multi-media platform that supports student learning in a fun and highly engaging way. The curriculum combines text, graphics and video to deliver content in a compelling way. Students are able to move through the 5 learning modules at their own pace and in an order that is intuitive to them.

How the Program Works
- Register online to participate in the program
- Two weeks prior to the salmon egg delivery, arrange a time for 4-H staff to work with parent salmon helpers to set up the cold water aquarium (the tank, chiller and all equipment is provided by the 4-H Youth Program)
- Choose the days and times for your students to complete the lessons
- Have students complete their 4-H Fish Stewards journals.
- work with 4-H Staff to schedule a "Salmon Release" classroom field trip date. 4-H Staff support teachers and parent Salmon helpers for transport and release of fish.
- Schedule a visit by 4-H staff to present award certificates of completion to each student.
- Encourage and support students to enter projects related to their 4-H Fish Stewards project in the Multnomah County 4-H County Fair.
- Complete the 4-H Classroom Enrollment Report
