Small Farms

The goal of the Douglas County Small Farms program is to improve the economic and environmental sustainability of small farms in our community by employing appropriate scale production and marketing techniques.

The program works toward improving small farm horticultural production, soil health quality, integrated pest management, poultry, forage production, and small-scale livestock.

The Douglas County Small Farms Program is invested in our community and works with multiple organizations to enhance the agricultural knowledge of people of all ages and backgrounds - offering hands-on education and fostering programs that empower participants to grow their own food, or even become future farmers.

Working with indigenous youth and families

In collaboration with the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians, "Tribal Roots Horticulture" aims to connect indigenous youth and families with hands-on agricultural education at our Agricultural Learning Center at River Forks Park in Roseburg.

Seed to Supper

A program in collaboration with the Oregon Department of Human Services that offers hands-on gardening education aiming to empower participants to grow their own food. This program is available to the clientele of the Roseburg District office of the DHS.

Veteran Agripreneurship and Gardening Education

In collaboration with the Douglas County Master Gardener™ Association and military veteran volunteers, the Small Farms Program offers both agricultural and beekeeping education tailored specifically for military veterans. "Boots on the Ground" is an educational group, established in 2025, that offers veterans an opportunity for hands-on learning geared towards those who wish to grow their own food or even start their own small farm. "Bee Basic" is a three-part series offered from June 2025-September 2025 on all things beekeeping. See the events page for more details on both of these programs.
