Youth Leadership Opportunities
4-H youth in Washington County participate in many different leadership roles: as club officers, ambassadors, camp counselors, teen teachers, and more! Learn more about our offerings below:
Washington County 4-H Ambassadors
Washington County 4-H Ambassadors are a group of high school-aged youth who assist in promoting 4-H through hands-on community service learning opportunities.
Ambassadors are expected to:
- attend monthly meetings
- participate in at least half of the county-wide events
- use social media to promote 4-H programs
- attend state-wide leadership retreats
Oregon 4-H Camp Counselor Program
Each year, Oregon 4-H trains hundreds of youth in 8th-12th grades who volunteer to be summer camp counselors at the Oregon 4-H Center in Salem. It is a fun summer experience to lead and teach campers in 3rd-8th grades, and an excellent way to expand your leadership skills! All youth across Oregon are welcome to apply to be a counselor at any of the following camp sessions:
- Four Rivers 4-H Camp (coordinated by 4-H faculty in Linn/Benton/Columbia counties)
- Wildlife Stewards 4-H Camp (coordinated by 4-H faculty in Portland Metro)
- Wild West 4-H Camp (coordinated by 4-H faculty in Marion/Tillamook/Polk/Washington counties)
- International 4-H Camp (coordinated by 4-H faculty in state 4-H office)
- Kids 4-H Camp (coordinated by 4-H faculty in Washington County)
- Outdoor Adventure 4-H Camp (coordinated by 4-H faculty in Washington County)
Counselors are expected to:
- Apply in December/January for the camp session they wish to be a counselor at.
- Attend monthly zoom trainings
- Attend the Outdoor Leadership Training at the Oregon 4-H Center in May.
- Volunteer as a 4-H camp counselor at least one summer camp session
Oregon Teen Science Cafe Youth Leadership Team
This is an exciting opportunity to explore different careers, prepare for life after high school, and thrive in leadership roles!
Youth Leadership Team Benefits

Join the Youth Leadership Team! You will:
- Assist in designing logos, promoting events at your school, and recruiting friends to attend.
- Lead cafes by helping to introduce STEM professionals, set up, and welcome people.
- Attend a 30 minute organizational meeting at the end of each cafe to plan the next cafe event

Building and improving leadership skills takes practice!
The Youth Leadership team designs and leads the The Oregon Teen Science Cafe program. 4-H teens on the Youth Leadership Team can practice their leadership skills and gain experience points (XP). This gives teens an opportunity to build leadership skills that match their strengths and interests.
